The USS Gerald R. Ford is a Nimitz class aircraft carrier, launched in October 2013. At 1,092 feet in length and with a breadth of 134 feet and height of 230 feet, its displacement is about 100,000 long tons. Its anchor weighs 30,000 pounds, and the chain is 1,440 feet long, with each link weighing 136 pounds.
Ask any seafarer and he will tell you that anchoring is a fundamental operation for any vessel. It secures the ship to the bed of a body of water so the craft does not drift. At the time it was commissioned, the USS Ford’s anchor was the largest in the world.
You have a personal anchor that is stronger yet! Indeed, the Lord is your anchor through the storms of life when the seas and winds are relentless. He will not let go of you or let you become adrift.
Years ago, members of the Boys Brigade used to sing a hymn written by Sunday School teacher Priscilla Owens that said, “We have an anchor that keeps the soul, steadfast and sure while the billows roll. Fastened to the Rock which cannot move, grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.”
When your anchor is God Himself, with prayer and His holy word acting as the chain to keep you secure, you can be certain that He will keep you safe regardless of the storms that come your way. The Lord is always true to His promises, and He loves you. You can trust Him to hold you fast.
