WE HAVE A CHOICE

My Spirit is upon you, and my words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart from your mouth. – Isaiah 59:21

Professor Thomas Sowell of Stanford University once wrote, “People commit crimes… because they put their own interests or egos above the interests, feelings, or lives of others.”

People sin for the same reason. They have choices, and they make the wrong ones for the wrong reasons.

In the days of Isaiah, the people and their leaders had made their choices. They were rebellious against God and His laws.

Isaiah 59:7 states, “Their feet run to evil, and they are swift to shed innocent blood; their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; desolation and destruction are in their highways.”

They were caught up in their culture. Their hearts were deceiving them. God’s heart was grieved, as it always is when the people He loves choose their own way.

The New Living Testament (NLT) version of today’s verse says, “And this is my covenant with them, says the Lord. My Spirit will not leave them, and neither will these words I have given you. They will be on your lips and on the lips of your children and of your children’s children forever; I, the Lord, have spoken.”

Because of His great love, God promised a Redeemer. For those who accepted the atonement of Jesus, He also promised His Holy Spirit to be a constant presence in their lives. As His promise at the conclusion of verse 21 says, “From this time forth and forevermore.” Amen.
