If God is for us, who can be against us? – Romans 8:31
Superhero movies have become increasingly popular in the United States. Many people love the idea of a hero triumphing over evil when all hope otherwise seems lost. It gives them the sense that as long as the hero is there, evil will never win. Do you ever see God in this kind of light?
Paul posed a similar question in Romans chapter 8, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” In order to fully understand the weight of this question, it is important to look at the beginning of his letter. In the first seven chapters, Paul writes about God’s wrath and judgment against sinful humanity. In fact, if people were to read only those first few chapters, they might think that God was actually against humankind.
However, Paul’s message then takes a turn, and the first 30 verses of Romans 8 describe the incredible lengths God went to in order to save humanity. Everyone who believes in God and the saving work of Jesus on the cross has been equipped to see victory over sin and evil. With God on your side, there is nothing that can overcome you. God has already proven that fact.
Like the citizens in a superhero movie, you can rest knowing you’ve got the ultimate Super Hero on your side, ready to defeat any evil that comes your way. Praise God for that!
