THE WORD OF GOD

The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.       – Psalm 19:7

Several years ago, a Gallup poll revealed that more than 30 percent of Americans believed that the Bible is the Word of God, and its teachings should be taken literally. Another 25 percent thought it inspired but should be considered symbolically and not literally. The remainder had their doubts. Among them are skeptics who deny that the stories, particularly those of the Old Testament, could be true.

Yet, each year, archaeological finds are being made in the Middle East that provide full credence to the accounts written in the Bible. The walls of Gath, Goliath’s hometown, have recently been discovered. An artifact from the Late Bronze Age contains inscriptions from ancient Israel, which are named YHWH. A cave with artifacts from the Exodus has been found in the Sinai desert.

King David had tremendous regard for the Word of God.

Psalm 19, from which today’s verse is taken, is one of his hymns to the beauty, reverence, value, and life-affirming nature of Scripture.

In the New Testament, the apostle Paul reminds his protégé, Timothy, “God breathes out all Scripture and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).

Maintain a steady diet of God’s Word in your life.
