THE ONLY TRUTH A SLAVE KNOWS IS WHAT HIS MASTER TELLS HIM.

You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

– John 8:32

A pastor friend recently stated, “The world is full of lying lips.” The enemy has used lies from the beginning to entice humanity to sin. Where do you find the truth? Jesus stated clearly, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Knowing the Person who is Truth will give you clear direction. Jesus urges you to be receptive to His words in faith, obey God’s commands, and exercise your faith in your relationships with God and your fellow man.

Two precious promises are contained in today’s verse. The first is, “You will know the truth” (John 8:32a). Scripture tells us that, in the knowledge of God and Jesus and His power, you will be granted “all things that pertain to life and godliness” (2 Peter 1:2-3). This means that you will know what is truth and what proves it to be so. This truth has as its greatest concern the care of the deep needs of your soul. The second promise is, “The truth will set you free” (John 8:32b). God’s truth frees you from spiritual enemies, and frees you from the bondage of sin. This liberation brings you into fellowship with God the Father.

“Make me a captive, Lord, and then I shall be free.” These words of George Matheson echo true for the believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, but they are strange to those who do not have faith in Christ.
