If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above. – Colossians 3:1
There is nothing more peaceful than a dead body. Worries, fear, bitterness—gone. Today’s verse instructs believers to seek the things that are above. The reason is given two verses later: “For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). Material things are needed to live this life, but they are not the most important. Jesus promises that if you seek God’s Kingdom first, the material provisions will be made. “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). As you live the Kingdom life, the cares of this world become incidentals.
When you place Jesus as King of your life, the earthly things, the lower things, die off, such as sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness (Colossians 3:5). As you mature, you say goodbye to anger, wrath, malice, slander, obscenity, and lying (vv. 8-9). The fruits of the newness of life, the Spirit of Christ, begin to grow within you: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23).
Many issues trouble the United States. It is tempting to focus on those problems and become vexed over the things that try to stand against the freedom to be who you are in Christ. The believer’s focus still needs to be on the desires of God. He does not wish anyone to perish, but that all would repent (2 Peter 3:9). Focus your prayers today on the lost souls of people in the United States.
