Deliver me from all my transgression. –
Psalm 39:8
There is little in the heart of humankind as powerful as the desire to be free. People and nations will stand against the mightiest odds to breathe the air of liberty. For example, about 1000 years before the life of Jesus Christ a poem was written recording the cry of a heart looking to God for deliverance, “Let my plea come before you; deliver me according to your word” (Psalm 119:170). No less than ten times in the Psalm the phrase “according to your word” appears. By studying the Old Testament writings available at his time, the author had some understanding of God’s promise to redeem humanity and release the repentant soul. This writer may not have imagined the magnitude of power unleashed in the name of Jesus Christ that is recorded in the New Testament for believers today.
In obedience, death, and resurrection, Christ overcame every agent and form of darkness. His victory is so complete even the keys to the devil’s hell were handed over to Him. Shackles of the bondage of fear, shame, bitterness, temptation, loneliness, guilt, and evil, along with all powers of deception and degeneration, are now broken in subjection to Christ. “Jesus came and said to them, all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me” (Matthew 28:18).
Like that old poet, study God’s word and find freedom from sin’s bondage in Christ Jesus. Confess to God your need for His deliverance and praise Him for His good and sufficient gift of the Savior.
