Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. – Matthew 5:9
Hopefully, you have encountered a few peaceable people in life! They have several recognizable qualities, including a couple that may be surprising. A peacemaking person is not a conflict-avoider. Instead, they press into a problem and offer help and restoration to all involved. They are interested in discovering the truth in difficult situations, not merely in clarifying opposing perspectives. A peacemaker will invite discussion and introduce principles of faith that may not have been considered by others.
The Greek word for a peacemaker is used when describing its greatest example in the Bible, “Through Him (Christ) to reconcile to Himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross” (Colossians 1:20). In His death, burial, and resurrection, Jesus Christ laid down His life to establish peace between God and humankind.
Becoming a person of God’s peace is not a personality trait. While some people are naturally more inclined to it than others, God calls all His children to be peacemakers. Ask the Lord to make you aware of areas in your life where you might bring His peace into a situation and open a door for Jesus Christ to be introduced. “How beautiful… are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation” (Isaiah 52:7).
