Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. – 1 Thessalonians 5:18
In the 1980s, architects and engineers worked out a stabilization program to halt a dangerous structural problem on the Tower of Pisa. Work began in 1990, yet the structure continues to lean 0.01 inches each year, which is less than had been occurring since its construction in the 14th century. The tower’s four-degree tilt is the result of its unstable, and only 3-meter deep, foundation. It was built on soft alluvial soil of loose sand and clay that proved unable to support the weight of the tower. As a result of the stabilizing work that added 600 tons of concrete to its base, engineers now believe the tower is no longer in danger of falling over.
Similar to buildings, the Christian life must be constructed on a strong foundation. God calls His followers to be thankful, as today’s verse states,” This is the will of Christ Jesus for you.” Note that it says you are to give thanks in all circumstances, not necessarily for them. No matter what happens, God desires you to be thankful because you believe in Jesus.
“Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift” (2 Corinthians 9:15).
Jesus is the Cornerstone of your foundation (Ephesians 2:20).
Being thankful is not dependent upon emotions or feelings. It requires an attitude of mind that recognizes God is in control and wants the best for you.
“Troubles may come, and troubles may go. We trust in Jesus; He loves us so,” lyricist Robert Harkness wrote in the old Sunday School chorus.
So, be encouraged, and be thankful for everything.
