Your Will Be Done

Let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator.

1 Peter 4:19

One of the most well-known passages of the Bible takes place when Jesus, at the point of unimaginable anguish, utters the words “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will” (Matthew 26:39). Surrender is the greatest challenge the follower of Christ faces; releasing control of your life and the idea that you know how to fix things if only God would cooperate.

Jesus was fully human in all ways including His prayer life. Imagine His distress as He met the murderous intent of His enemies, knowing they would show no mercy to kill the truth He made them face. He never doubted the Father’s love, but He did ask if it could play out differently. Releasing His human desires, He chose to align His will to the will of the Father walking directly into the conflict. Just like you, Jesus, the man, not yet the enthroned victorious Christ, had to choose to submit His will to the Father.

A season of unrest grips the world today, and yet the eternal Father and His plan remain sovereign. Jesus was able to utter those powerful words of faith in dire circumstances because He had already been saying them His entire life, even teaching His disciples to pray “Your Kingdom come, your will be done” (Matthew 6:10).

May these well-known words of Christ be well-known words in your life. Pray for America to be filled with faithful men and women, both in leadership and at home, who follow Christ and proclaim “Father, not my will but your will be done.”
