Your unchanging God

The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations.

Psalm 33:11

Navy SEALs are told upon arrival for training to “get comfortable with being uncomfortable.” For most people on Earth, the last 18 months have brought about significant change, some of it is likely uncomfortable. How are you doing with your new un-comforts?

Well-being in the life of Christ’s followers looks significantly different than for those without faith. While humankind is disabled by fear, trying to control what might happen next, God calls His people to look past the external world and to anchor their hope in a grounding aspect of His character. He is unchanging.

The apostle James draws a beautiful picture of God’s Spirit, not subject to earthly physics or time, “with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change” (James 1:17). And just to make sure you get the point, God spoke plainly through the prophet Malachi, “I the Lord, do not change” (Malachi 3:6).

Your unchanging God has an unchanging heart of compassion for you. How do you know? Examine the Bible and the life of Jesus Christ: “he is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation” (Colossians 1:15). And His affection for you is clear, “for God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

Thank God today that He has made trusting Him so simple. Get comfortable in His love and, like those Navy SEALs, being uncomfortable in your earthly assignment will not be a problem!
