What is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man, that you care for him?

Psalm 8:4
It is nearly impossible to experience the full impact of a star-studded night when you live in a city. The darkness of the sky touched by a vast array of twinkling lights intensifies the smallness of man compared to the greatness of God’s creation. As a shepherd, the young psalmist David was privy to the sight every night.
His question to God, “What is man that you are mindful of him?” underscores David’s sense of humility. How could God care about a person who is like a grain of sand on the seashore as far as size and seeming usefulness? Creator God put the moon and stars in their place, He touched the waters of the Earth and gave them boundaries. At a wave of His fingers, He created animals of every shape and size, birds large and small, sea creatures with unique ways of life, and vegetation to feed them all.
But stop and think… He formed humanity from the dust of the ground. The Lord shaped the human being with care to make him in His own image. He breathed life into him. Think of it. You are an image-bearer of God. It is not something that should fill you with pride. Instead, pause in humility and adoration for the Lord who continues to care for you in ways you may not even comprehend.
Believer, bend your knee in praise of the Lord Almighty, whose arm is strong and whose comfort is compassionate and caring.
