Walking Worthy

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

3 John 1:4

In today’s verse, John the apostle speaks of his “spiritual children.” What greater joy does a parent have than to see their own children walk in the truth of the gospel? Parents are often so worried about their children’s success in their careers, relationships, health, and family that concerns about spiritual truths get overshadowed.

How a child functions in society is important and finding a career that suits their talents is a worthwhile pursuit. However, the building block of a successful Christian life is walking in the truth of the gospel. Knowing who you are in Christ – saved, forgiven, belonging to Him, and responsible to Him – are the basics of what every Christian parent should want for their children. If they are successful in the world but turn their back on the Savior, their success is in vain. Jesus said, “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:36).
