Walk in wisdom toward others, making the best use of the time. – Colossians 4:5
In the 1970s, some so-called religious people claimed the Lord would return in 1980. Many were sufficiently embarrassed to not make such a prediction again. However, as the world turns to more evil, many Christians say that Christ’s return could be soon. There is truth in that, but a believer’s comments should always reflect the truth of the Bible rather than speculation.
The apostle Paul was well-educated and could probably speak as well as any man, but he was always quick to request prayer that he might present the message of the Gospel in the clearest possible way. When he spoke in Athens, he did not insult the philosophers of the day, but he was very clear about God, the Creator and Sustainer of life.
“In him, we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).
He quoted one of their poets to let them know he understood their philosophy. He proceeded to deliver the message of the Gospel and many believed.
Paul’s words in today’s verse bid you to make the best use of time with those within your sphere of influence regarding how you approach sharing the message of the Gospel.
Each person is different.
“Let your speech be gracious,” not boring, but “seasoned with salt” so you can have answers that engage that person (Colossians 4:6).
Through prayer, God will provide wisdom in your speech and opportunities to share His good news.
Always be prepared “to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you” (1 Peter 3:15).
