THE RISEN CHRIST

THE RISEN CHRIST

JOHN 21:1-25

LAST WEEK: Or up till now we have talked about

1. The events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

2. The crucifixion of Jesus Christ

3. The resurrection of Jesus Christ

And now we are looking at what Jesus did after he rose.

From the resurrection to when Jesus went to be with the Father it was 50 days that day is called Pentecost.

(Q) How many days?

Pentecost is when the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples.

(Q) Who is are disciples of the Lord?

Talk about the Holy Spirit as the comforter and how He is part of the trinity.

How God never leaves us nor forsakes us.

JOHN 21:1-25 NIV

Breakfast by the Sea

1 After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. 4 But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Then Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?” They answered Him, “No.”

6 And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of how many fish. 7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. 9 Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.” 11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, 153; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. 12 Jesus said to them “Come and eat breakfast.” Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are you?”—knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish. 14 This is now the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.

Jesus Restores Peter

15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.”

He said to him, “Feed My lambs.” 16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.

18 Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” 19 This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me.”

The Beloved Disciple and His Book

20 Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?”

21 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?”

22 Jesus said to him, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?

You follow Me.”

The Books Peter Writes in the Bible

23 Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true. 25 And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.

ATTENTION GRABBER!

Through Christ, I Can... Play “Simon Says” with a different twist. Instead of saying “Simon Says” and giving a command, say “Through Christ.” This will remind the children that only through Christ can we do anything. As an example, have the leader say: Through Christ, I can touch my head Through Christ I can clap three times. I can jump on one foot. Through Christ, I can touch my ears. If the children copy the leader when he says, “I can” they are out; if they copy Simon when he says “Through Christ” they can continue to play. Continue playing using other commands, on occasion the leader should see if they can throw off the rest of the group by giving a command without saying, “through Christ.”

Explain to the children that today they will learn that we can do all things through Christ.

In the first part of our lesson we are going to see where Jesus performs a miracle for His disciples. He has risen from the dead and has only appeared to His disciples a couple of times.

(Q) What holiday is that?

Through the miracle that Jesus would perform, Jesus was going to teach His disciples a valuable lesson.

We will learn for our lives that we can do all things through Christ. We begin our story with Jesus at the Sea of Tiberias, also known as the Sea of Galilee.

Jesus had told the disciples to meet Him in Galilee. While they waiting for Him, Peter decided to go fishing. The other disciples followed him.

It is possible that Peter began to doubt that Jesus was going to come back and he returned to what he did before he met Jesus. Peter may have thought that everything was over in the way of a ministry. But Jesus wasn’t done using Peter. He certainly had other plans for him. Peter was a natural-born leader.

He comes up with the idea that he was going to go back into the fishing business and the rest of the disciples thought that would be a good idea. So they all packed into a boat and went out fishing. They spend the whole night fishing and the Bible says that they caught nothing.

(Q) Have you ever tried to do anything apart from Jesus, in your own strength?

So many times it turns out to be a disaster. What the disciples were learning here was very valuable. They couldn’t do anything without Jesus.

Jesus said in John 15, “without Me you can do nothing.”

We need Jesus’ help and blessing upon everything we do for it to go right.

4 But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Then Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?”

They answered Him, “No.” 6 And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of how many fish.

The disciples had fished all night but had caught nothing.

Because they did it without trusting in the Lord.

Jesus knew they had a need; they had no food. So Jesus met the need and told them where they could find fish. The disciples tried all night to accomplish things on their own but as soon as they had Jesus' word they had success. We too can try to accomplish things in our own power but we will never know true success until we are doing what Jesus has told us to do.

Something else that is interesting is that they were doing what they knew best, fishing. Peter had spent his entire life fishing before he came to Jesus. So he might have been considered kind of an expert.

(Q) So do you think that it may have been difficult for him to take instruction from someone when he is an expert?

Peter found that there were so many fish that the net couldn’t even hold them all. Jesus provided for all of his needs. Jesus was communicating to Peter that he didn’t need to go back to fishing as his occupation.

He was going to provide for him. God had other plans for Peter’s life.

God has a plan for our lives as well. We can trust Him to provide everything we need.

Some of you will become pastors and church workers, evangelists, and Sunday school teachers.

John is known as “the disciple whom Jesus loved." And he was the first to recognize Jesus. He got excited and yelled out, “It is the Lord!”

Now Peter got even more excited and jumped in the water. Peter seemed to like to jump in the water whenever he saw Jesus.

(Q) Remember when he jumped in the water when he saw Jesus walking on the water?

Peter loved Jesus very much and couldn’t wait to be able to spend time with Him. The others followed in the boat bringing the fish with them.

The bible says they were about 200 cubits that is about 300 feet you and I.

9 Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.”

11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, 153; and although there were so many, the net was not broken.

While in the boat, the disciples could not draw in the net because it was so heavy, but when Jesus commanded Peter to bring the fish he was able to drag it to land by himself. When Jesus tells us to do something, He gives us the power to do it, even though it may seem impossible.

The bible says with the faith of a mustard seed we can move mountains and we can do all things through Christ who gives us strength.

. 12 Jesus said to them “Come and eat breakfast.” Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are you?”— knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish. 14 This is now the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.

Jesus showed His acceptance of the disciples, despite their lack of faith, by asking them to eat with Him. This showed that they were still a part of Him and His ministry and He loved them just like He loves you and me.

The disciples realized their mistake in doubting that Jesus would come and did not ask Him who He was.

This was the third time the disciples saw Jesus alive after He was buried and rose on the third day. Jesus served the disciples breakfast. He cooked it and ministered to them.

Jesus is a servant and He wants us to be servants. We can learn from His example!

We need to trust God's word and know it. We also need to be confident that when Jesus tells us to do something, He will equip us to do it.

Jesus is a servant and He is our example of how to serve and be a good helper. Peter loved God but being human he sinned against God when he denied Jesus three times, he was sorry but it was important for Jesus to minister to Peter and let him know He forgave him.

Jesus will always forgive us when we confess our sins.

The bible say when we confess our sins Jesus is faithful and just to forgive us of all unrighteousness. (I John 1:9)

Jesus then instructs Peter to teach his little ones or children.

Jesus said lambs and a lamb is a baby sheep.

Then Jesus ask a second time and Peter said yes Lord then Jesus says serve my sheep, what Jesus was saying is serve me.

Then Jesus said do you love me a third time do you love me and the bible says Peter was grieved, depressed and upset because Jesus asked him again and he said yes. So Jesus said feed my sheep, meaning teach my children.

We can be servants without teaching but Peter is told to serve and teach.

Jesus was telling Peter that he would be killed because of his belief in Jesus, and his death would honor God. When this happened, he was not to be afraid because God is always in control, even when we can't see it. He was to follow Jesus no matter what happened.

We also need to obey and follow Jesus. If we fail, we need to confess and ask forgiveness each time and be restored so that God can use us.

(Q) For you and me it is not a problem right now but

What would you do if some men came in here and held gun to your head and said if you don’t deny Jesus as Lord. I will shoot you in the head what would you do if it meant if you did you might go to hell?

The Beloved Disciple and His Book

20 Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?”

We know that disciple to be Judas but John thought it would be another one of the 12.

We all betray Jesus every time we sin.

21 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?”

Peter ask, ya, Lord what’s going to happen to this man?

22 Jesus said to him, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?

You follow Me.”

In a sense Jesus was saying to Peter, It is none of your business what I do. Then Jesus says follow Me.

(Q) Can we follow Jesus half heart?

The bible says to love Jesus with all our hearts and with all our minds so when we follow Jesus we need to give our all to him.

Peter wrote in the New Testament 1 Peter and 2 Peter. These books are epistles, or letters, for instruction to the early church and for us.
