The Love Of God

If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I am nothing. – 1 Corinthians 13:3

The North Star – Shakespeare had Julius Caesar use it as a metaphor for his faithfulness: “I am constant as the northern star.” But even Polaris is subject to change. Scientists think it is approximately 4.6 times brighter today than it was in ancient times, and the reasons are puzzling. But it still sits almost directly in line with Earth’s axis, and it is still great for navigating—at least it has not moved!

Today’s world is constantly changing. Finding your fixed point of reference in such turbulent times must be considered carefully. Many put their trust in political platforms and social programs for justice, yet the Bible warns not even the best human intentions can be completely trusted.

The love of God is the believer’s North Star, it does not move: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore, I have continued my faithfulness to you” (Jeremiah 31:3). And nothing can separate you from it: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? … For I am sure that neither death nor life nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come nor powers, nor height nor depth nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:35-39).

Let no good work or worthy program replace your dependence on God’s love as your guide. Anchor your hope only in Him!
