Session 2: Sea of Galilee

Welcome to week two of the In the Footsteps of the Savior study by Max Lucado with the community at FaithGateway! This week, we're diving into Session 2: Sea of Galilee. Perhaps one of the most memorable locations in Israel, the Sea of Galilee is the location for many important events (see page 31 of your study guide for some examples). This week, we'll look at the story of Jesus walking on water. Are you ready to dive in? To kick us off this week, read the passage from Max below before you watch the video.

Under clear skies? Creeping into darker waters? Or smack dab in the middle of a storm? Perhaps it feels as if the storm has been raging for days, weeks, and years. You can’t remember the last time you experienced calm waters or saw blue skies. Or maybe you just got through one storm only to find another one looming on the horizon. Back-to-back squalls. Nature can be so cruel. Life can be so cruel. Jesus said to his followers, “In this world, you will have trouble” (John 16:33). In other words, life comes with storms. The atmospheric conditions of this fallen world create a low-pressure system that generates struggles, stress, and challenges. Trials sweep into our lives and transform what was once calm and tranquil into turbulent and chaotic. As the winds continue to rage, we wonder if God is aware of our storm . . . and if he will see us through it. The disciples in this week’s story found themselves in a literal storm as they followed Jesus’ instructions to get into a boat and travel to the opposite side of the Sea of Galilee. They had reason to be afraid. They had reason to fear for their lives. And as the winds continued to rage, they had reason to wonder if Jesus knew of their plight and would see them through it. In this session, you will dig deeper into the disciples’ experience. You will explore how it parallels the storms you are facing. And you will discover that Jesus is present when the storms are at their peak—and that he calls you to take courage in the great I Am. - Max
