RECAP LAST WEEK: DAVID IS MADE KING
ATTENTION GRABBER!
Memory Hop
Prior to class, write out today’s theme on small sheets of paper (one-word per sheet). Do two sets.
For the younger classes, try shortening the theme to
“Serve God the right way.”
Discuss the theme.
Choose two players and have them come to the front of the class.
Next, tell the two children to turn around and close their eyes (no peeking!). While they have their eyes closed, distribute both sets of the words of the theme in various areas of the classroom.
Then have them open their eyes and find the words of the theme in order.
See which child can put together the theme first.
This will test their memory and how well they were listening to the theme.
Call on other children.
Does God want us to serve Him the right way and be obedient to Him?
LESSON TIME!
Who has heard of the Ark of the Covenant?
The ark of God was considered very special to Israel and valued as a sacred treasure.
It was a symbol of God’s presence and power.
King David desired to re-establish its place of importance in the hearts of the people of Israel and make it the center of worship in Jerusalem.
In fact, it was on David’s heart to eventually build a temple to house the ark.
David had some things to learn about handling the ark—the
symbol of God’s presence and power.
God required respect and obedience.
A heavy price was paid because of neglect and compromise in following God’s instructions.
2 Samuel 6:1-19 The Ark Brought to Jerusalem
(1 Chr. 13:1–14; 15:25—16:3)
1 Again David gathered all the choice men of Israel, thirty thousand.
This is the second time David is bringing the ark to Jerusalem. The first time was in 1Ch. 13:1-8
Notice he uses all the choices men. He used his best men because the ark was special.
30,000 in all
2 And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baale Judah to bring up from there the ark of God,
David did not just give orders like King Saul did he went with his people.
Baale Judah: means "city of thickets"
One of the four chief cities of the Gibeonites (Joshua 9:17); a city of Judah (Joshua 15:60)
it was one of the places on the borderline between Judah and Benjamin (Joshua 18:14, 15; Joshua 15:11 (where it is called "Baalah")
Baʿalah ("Mistress" in the Northwest Semitic languages), is the feminine form of Baʿal ("Lord")
There were 5 names for that city in total.
whose name is called by the Name, the LORD of Hosts, who dwells between the cherubim.
By the Name, the LORD of Hosts: The sovereign LORD of hosts has the grace to always be there for the one who comes to Him through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. The King of glory, who commands the armies of heaven and who will eventually defeat all His enemies in this world, is none other than Jesus Christ. He is the LORD of hosts (Revelation 19:11–20).,
Who dwells between the cherubim? This talks about God as our security and glory.
The ark has two cherubim, one on each side with its wings forward.
This is called the mercy seat.
The ark represented the presence of God.
3 So they set the ark of God on a new cart,
Notice it was a new cart Because we need to give our best to the Lord.
But the ark was only to be carried by the Levites of the family of Kohath (Numbers 4:15). That was God’s instruction.
and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill;
and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drove the new cart. 4 And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill, accompanying the ark of God;
Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drove the new cart and went with it.
and Ahio went before the ark.
Ahio, Aminadab’s son went before the ark
5 Then David and all the house of Israel played music before the LORD on all kinds of instruments of fir wood, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on sistrums, and on cymbals.
This was a joyous time for all of Israel so, they worshiped the Lord with music and played instruments
6 And when they came to Nachon’s threshing floor, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled.
Nachon’s threshing floor: Nachon was the owner of the mill called the threshing floor---
the ox would walk over the grain till it became flour to make bread.
Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it because the oxen stumbled
7 Then the anger of the LORD was aroused against Uzzah,
God got made because no one was to touch the ark but the priest.
It is holy!
and God struck him there for his error, and he died there by the ark of God.
Remember we talked about obedience and chastisement?
The punishment for touching the ark was death.
So, what would be the punishment for touching a hot stove?
Uzzah died because he touched the ark just as if we touch a hot stove and get burnt.
8 And David became angry because of the LORD’s outbreak against Uzzah,
David got upset at God because God kept His word.
You need to remember God does not lie or repent to man, if His word says He will do it, it will come to pass.
and he called the name of the place Perez Uzzah to this day.
Perez Uzzah means: Broken- Strength
9 David was afraid of the LORD that day;
David was afraid of the Lord because the Lord kept His word.
and he said, “How can the ark of the LORD come to me?”
10 So David would not move the ark of the LORD with him into the City of David,
David in his fear did not move the Ark of the Lord, he thought he was going to die as well.
but David took it aside into the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite.
David put the ark in the house of Obed-Edom and left it there and things begin to happen
11 The ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months.
The ark of the Lord was in Obed-Edom’s home for three months and God began to bless him and all his house. And the people got jealous so they complained to David
And the LORD blessed Obed-Edom and all his household.
12 Now it was told King David, saying, “The LORD has blessed the house of Obed-Edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.”
So, David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with gladness.
David now hears of the blessings on the home of Obed-Edom and he decides to move the ark to Jerusalem which is the city of David
13 And so it was when those bearing the ark of the LORD had gone six paces, that he sacrificed oxen and fatted sheep.
So, the people bearing the ark of God would sacrifice to God every six steps because of great fear of the first time it was moved.
14 Then David danced before the LORD with all his might,
David started to worship God.
He even danced before God in praise to Him.
and David was wearing a linen ephod.
A linen ephod: is the Loin cloth
15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting and with the sound of the trumpet.
They brought up the ark and praised the Lord playing music on trumpets.
They were happy with the Joy of the Lord.
The Bible says,
Neh. 8:10 Then he said to them, “Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
Where does your strength come from?
16 Now as the ark of the LORD came into the City of David, Michal, Saul’s daughter, looked through a window and saw King David leaping and whirling before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart.
Saul’s daughter was not happy with David jumping around with so little on but she was so mad it says she despised him, she literally hated him.
We are not to hate, are we?
17 So they brought the ark of the LORD, and set it in its place in the midst of the tabernacle that David had erected for it.
David could not build the temple because there was blood on his hands from battle so, his son Solomon built it but he needed a place to put the ark.
So, he put up a temporary building for it.
Then David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.
After it was all said and done, he sacrificed to the Lord and gave thanks.
18 And when David had finished offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts.
19 Then he distributed among all the people, among the whole multitude of Israel, both the women and the men, to every one a loaf of bread, a piece of meat, and a cake of raisins.
When it was all over David blessed the people and they were given bread and raisins and they all went to their own homes
So, all the people departed, everyone to his house.
MEMORY VERSE

whose name is called by the Name, the LORD of Hosts, who dwells between the cherubim.
The Right Way and the Wrong Way CRAFT
For this craft, you will need crayons or markers and drawing paper.
Give each child a piece of drawing paper. Have the children draw a line down the center of the paper.
On one side have them draw a picture of the ark being transported incorrectly.
On the other side, have them draw a picture of the ark being transported the right way.
Ask the children why it was so important to move the ark the right way.
Use this craft to reinforce today’s lesson.
Remind the children how that sometimes our hearts may be in the right place when we do something, but it is very important that we do it the right way, according to God’s Word.
