Seek the Lord

  • Seek the Lord, you humble of the land, and who do his just commands, seek righteousness, seek humility. – Zephaniah 2:3

There’s a popular joke circling the internet right now that says, “Procrastinators of the world, unite… tomorrow!” While this is a humorous way to poke fun at people who tend to put things off, how might this idea be applied to a believer’s relationship with God? Perhaps the phrase would go something like “Christians of the world, seek the Lord… when you get around to it!”

It seems as though the Israelites in the Old Testament lived their lives in accordance with this mindset. During the time of the prophet Zephaniah, those living in Judah were facing corruption throughout their land. They had begun incorporating idolatry and religious practices from neighboring people groups into their daily lives, with some people rejecting the worship of God altogether.

Because of these actions, God gave Zephaniah a message to share with the people: that there would soon be a judgment upon the world. In today’s passage, Zephaniah called those that were still loyal to God alone to get right with Him immediately, that they might be spared when God poured out His anger.

Zephaniah was calling the pious of the nation of Judah to seek the Lord, those individuals who were still loyal to Him. The healing of their nation needed to start with them, and it was not something that could be put off any longer. Today, America is in need of healing. Take Zephaniah’s words to heart. Do not delay in seeking the Lord.
