John 15:18-25 18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also.21 But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me.22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.23 He who hates Me hates My Father also.24 If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father.25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’
The Work of the Holy Spirit-John 15:26-27
The Coming Rejection
26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
John 16: 1-15
Jesus Warns and Comforts His Disciples
1 “These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble. 2 They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. 3 And these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. 4 But these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them. “And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.
The Work of the Holy Spirit
5 “But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.
Remembering last week we talked about the vine and branches and the gardener who is Jesus Father.
We also talked about the promise of the Holy Spirit and that all those who worship Jesus are commanded to love one another John 15:1-17
John 15:17 These things I command you, that you love one another.
(Q) What does that mean?
The bible talks about different kinds of love.
1. There is love when Jesus died on the cross That is called Agopa Love -sacrificial love because Jesus was sacrificed on the cross in our place. He was sinless and we have sin.
2. Then there is the love of your sibling Phileo Love and the city of Philadelphia Pennsylvania is called the city of brotherly love.
3. There is Airose Love a kind of love when you hug someone and show affection.
4. Last is emotional love like when you cry because someone dies. That is called Stargate Love.
When we come to know Jesus as Lord we are commanded to love as He loves us and gave Himself for us when He died on the cross.
1John 4:11-12
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us.
So part of that love is loving people we don’t like and people who are mean and bullies.
Now Jesus is going to talk to the disciples about persecution and the mean and bad people in the world.
John 15:18. “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.
Jesus said the world hated Him first.
(Q) Who is the world?
Who put Jesus on the cross?
We all have sin and Jesus died for all sinners so we all put Jesus on the cross.
19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
When we were in the world we acted like others in the world.
Now we hang around like-minded people who do similar things like go to church.
Jesus said He chose us. We did not come to the Lord on our own. The Holy Spirit led us to Jesus and opened our eyes. Then we took a step of faith and receive Jesus as Lord and Savior.
20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also.21 But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me.
(Q) Who is a servant of Jesus? And who is our master and Lord?
Then Jesus said if they obey my teachings they will obey yours. The teaching He is talking about is His word, the bible.
22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.
When Jesus was alive He was teaching us how to live. So we call the bible, BASIC, INSTRUCTIONS, BEFORE LEAVING EARTH. So, because we have the word we also know what sin is. We have the 10 commandments and the beatitude in Matthew 5 and everything in the bible.
23 He who hates Me hates My Father also.24 If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father.25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’
When Jesus died on the cross it was told by the prophets it was going to happen we call that a prophesy. That means future events.
So John 15:25 is the fulfillment of Psalms Psalm 69:4,
Those who hate me without a cause Are more than the hairs of my head; They are mighty who would destroy me, Being my enemies wrongfully; Though I have stolen nothing, I still must restore it.
Psalm 35:19 "Let them not rejoice over me who are wrongfully my enemies; Nor let them wink with the eye who hate me without a cause.
The Work of the Holy Spirit-John 15:26-16:15
26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.
Jesus now is going to talk more about the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our advocate and last week we said it is like an attorney who defends another person. After Jesus died and rose 50 days later the Holy Spirit came to lead us guide us and teach us and now Jesus says He will defend us.
27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
The word testify means to have a testimony or to have a story of what you believe or led you to believe.
(Q) What is our testimony as a Christian?
What do we talk about as believers?
John 16:1 These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble. Or fall away.
Everything Jesus has told us up to this point is so we don’t fall away or go back into the world.
2 They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. 3 And these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father nor Me.
Jesus goes on to say how people will do mean things to you and not tell the truth about you and maybe harm you because there are mean people in the world who do not believe in Jesus. But that does not give us the right to be mean back to them.
4 But these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them. “And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.
5 “But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
So Jesus warned us of the bad things that happen in the world and now the disciples are upset because Jesus is saying He is leaving them and going back to the Father. They could not understand and Jesus knew they were upset.
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me;10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more;11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
Jesus makes it clear to the disciples that unless He goes to the Father the Holy Spirit will not come and it is better because the Holy Spirit is everywhere but Jesus could not be everywhere at once. He then says the Holy Spirit will judge the world for sin because not everyone knows Jesus. And righteousness because we believe in Him and He went to the Father. And then Judgment because Satan is condemned he is the prince of this world.
12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.
