Keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen.
– Deuteronomy 4:9
What have you seen during your walk with the Lord? Have you experienced healing, guidance, or answers to specific prayers? Have there been times in your life you’ve heard that still, small voice whisper His love to you? Do you remember what was happening at the time you decided to follow Jesus? It is important to recall those occasions when you spiritually hear and see Him, those times when you know that you know He is all who He says He is.
When troubles come, the way seems unclear, or when you feel the grip of fear, remembering the answers and interventions you have experienced from God helps to strengthen your faith to press on. A person who is convinced that God is who He says He is will be the one who will be able to overcome temptations. Those whose faith has been fortified by seeing God show up and answer prayer are the ones who will rely on Him to bring them through.
It can be a challenge to recall those special blessings when troubles come. One way to remember them is to write on slips of paper – answers to prayer, Bible verses that have “come alive” to you, or meaningful events – and put them in a jar. At the end of the year, take a look at them and give thanks. Or keep a daily thanksgiving journal to remind you how great God is. The daily news can bring discouragement. Be careful to pray, observe, and remember what you see God do. All things are possible with Him (Matthew 19:26).
