Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. –
Colossians 3:2
Most believers have heard the term “heavenly minded” at some point. While it is mainly a form of speech, even “Christianese,“ it represents a certain reality in the life of a follower of Christ. While believers appear to be everyday people, living everyday lives, there is more to their lives than the banal motions of living. The Holy Spirit residing in the hearts of God’s people brings the possibility of restoration and redemption into every human exchange.
When you are faced with the brokenness and suffering caused by sin, you have a choice to make. You can focus on the problems and be drawn into the realm of darkness where thoughts may turn toward blame, fear, doubt, and isolation, leading to hopelessness. Or you may devotedly set your mind upon God’s love and desire to rescue hurting people. This way you develop living faith that encourages you to pray, further opening up your life to the miracles that result from God’s grace.
What is captivating your thoughts today? “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace” (Romans 8:5-6).
Remind yourself to adopt a heavenly mindset and focus your thoughts today on devotion to God and dedication to His word.
