For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. – Psalm 33:21
At this time of year, some parents are sending their children off to college. They trust that these young people will work hard to get the most out of their time away. They tend to trust that those who teach these students will be guided by truth and accuracy. Hopefully, their trust is not being misplaced.
The writer who penned today’s psalm gave thanks and praise to God who had proven to be and do all that this follower could have desired. The psalmist first indicates the reasons for praise: the truth of God’s Word, His faithfulness to those who fear Him, and His love of righteousness and justice. Then, the writer describes God’s power and the ease with which He created the Heavens and the Earth, gathering the waters in deep storehouses (Psalm 33:4-7).
The psalmist then looks at God’s wisdom which cannot be undone or frustrated by nations or their leaders. Nor can anyone hide their plans from Him, for He observes all their deeds, and His gaze discerns all (vv. 8-15). This believer continues with the encouragement that “the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love” (v. 18). God will deliver them, so they are not without hope, for He is their help and shield, and will deliver their soul from death (vv. 19-20). Such promises from a loving and faithful God are cause for joy without bounds!
So today, be glad in Him and trust His holy name. Then intercede for those in this nation, especially the government leaders, that they would recognize the truth of God’s Word, and look to Him for help.
