Be faithful in times of joy and adversity

For everything, there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven.

– Ecclesiastes 3:1

Some Bible translators noted, “There is an appropriate occasion for every human event or activity; life is endlessly complex.”

Ecclesiastes points to “the necessity of fearing God in a fallen, and therefore frequently confusing and frustrating, world.” But do not despair. Cling to God – He deserves your trust even when you cannot see the entire picture.

The New Testament writers continuously encouraged new believers to be faithful in times of joy and adversity… for God is in control and His timing is perfect. Thus, every believer has an obligation to magnify God in every season of life. The season can be short, as when sickness comes and is short-lived. The farmer’s planting season requires seeds to be planted within a specific timeframe or the harvest will be scarce. Your relationship with a friend may last only a short season in which you may share your love of the Lord.

The apostle Paul wrote from prison to the believers in Ephesus, one of many such seasons in his life. He encouraged them to “walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience” (Ephesians 4:1-2). It does not matter which season of life you are in right now, make the best use of your time. When you live your life committed and submitted to God, your time will be used wisely and purposefully for Him.
